About us
Sicily, wherever we are. A newspaper about Sicily through the eyes of Sicilians on the island, those living elsewhere, and those who have made it their home.

Our perspective
Sicily extends beyond its borders: in families keeping in touch, people returning, businesses opening and the choices of those who stay. U Chianu brings these perspectives into conversation: the everyday experience of island life and the view of those following it from another city or country.
Where is Sicily heading?
We follow municipal life, work, schools, transport, water, the environment, culture and public resources. We look at decisions and their consequences: who decides, which services change, who bears the costs and what communities gain. Small towns belong alongside cities, in a view of Sicily extending beyond visitor destinations.
Here, elsewhere, returning
Sicilians living elsewhere belong in the same newspaper. Departures, returns, associations, language, work and links with a home town reveal how belonging changes. New Locals also includes people arriving from elsewhere and building a life here: communities are understood through everyone who lives in them.
A method before a position
We read records, follow resources and compare announcements with results. A funding award differs from a working construction site; a programme differs from a completed activity; an opinion differs from a verified fact. Articles identify and link their sources, while allegations and assessments remain attributed to their authors.
Editorial summaries do not imply independent interviews or on-the-ground reporting. We also use automation and artificial intelligence to support research, writing and translation, keeping sources, dates and the limits of available information visible.
Two languages, one island
We publish in Italian and English to connect Sicily with readers experiencing it in another language and communities abroad. The IT/EN switch keeps the same page open. Event dates remain distinct from the date we publish an article.
Why U Chianu?
Our name evokes the chianu: an open space, a village square, somewhere people meet. We take inspiration from that role: hearing the news, exchanging views and recognising a community, even from far away.
The network
Alongside La Contrada and La Chiazza, U Chianu shares an interest in communities and a bilingual approach to local information, with its own Sicilian identity.
