The village shop must work after the visitors leave

Matteo Cerri’s proposal places everyday commerce at the centre of making a place liveable.

In Empori di paese ↗, Matteo Cerri and ITS Italy propose combining essential retail with practical services. Its starting case is a small settlement outside Sicily: the housing proportions cited are indicative, not a census. The proposed viability depends on local use.

For Sicilian villages, U Chianu suggests a test that is easy to describe and demanding to implement: build the business case around ordinary months before adding visitor spending. Which purchases would recur? Which activities require authorisations, staff or agreements with operators? Who covers substitutions, deliveries and maintenance? These are planning questions, not services already available or revenues demonstrated in an island municipality.

A shop can reduce the time needed for an everyday necessity, but social value does not automatically pay rent and wages. A pilot should state shared costs, actual demand and any public-support conditions; it should also test access for people who do not drive. The proposal comes from an author and group professionally active in territorial development. We present it as a business hypothesis to assess, disclosing ITS Italy’s commercial interest and the shared editorial network.
