Mussomeli and the homes sold beyond the slogan

The €1 headline can introduce the ordinary property market; subsequent use still needs measuring.

Matteo Cerri’s material identifies Mussomeli as the strongest studied signal of movement from interest in symbolic-price homes towards other inexpensive properties. The mechanism described is a facilitated private market, not a count of municipally owned homes sold. Attributing every local transaction to the scheme would erase the distinction that makes the case useful.

The manuscript’s 2024 OMI snapshot reports approximately 219.09 normalised residential transactions, or around 22.3 per thousand residents. NTN adjusts transferred property shares: it does not count foreign customers, €1 homes or newly arrived households. The book treats possible longitudinal outperformance as a hypothesis requiring comparable series, not established causation.

U Chianu believes the next assessment should follow use, maintenance and local demand after building work ends. A moving market can generate work without reversing population decline; an occasional second home does not sustain the same services as a resident family.
