Income comes from elsewhere; everyday life happens here

RELOCALS separates the geography of income from labels about work and relocation.

The initial RELOCALS group comprises 103 participants: the author-supplied kit reports that 63.1% generate income mainly outside Italy, 66% are aged 35–54 and only two are retired. None of these findings classifies everyone as a digital nomad or remote employee. The percentages also describe separate questions, not an automatically combined individual portrait.

For Sicilian communities, the useful question concerns needs that remain local when earnings cross borders. Housing, transport, relationships and a partner’s activities can affect whether someone stays even when their main work is independent of the local market. This is an editorial reading of the implications: the study does not here measure a Sicilian population or quantify spending and tax receipts in its municipalities.

The RELOCALS introduction ↗ presents Matteo Cerri’s research, produced by NOMAG, ITS Italy and We the Italians. Recruitment is purposive and findings preliminary: this is not a census of foreign-born residents. Disclosure: the author belongs to the ITS Italy/NOMAG editorial and operational ecosystem, which has interests in relocation and territorial services. That link makes separating evidence from proposals especially important.
